HÅM’s History
Hannah and Åse met during Hannah’s first year at the Art Academy. Åse quickly recognized Hannah’s need to take the textile medium seriously and, in 2020, encouraged her to write a defense of textiles for the art journal Pist Protta.
That same year, Hannah and Sabitha created the exhibition Pure Opspind at the Art Academy’s exhibition space Q. The exhibition was accompanied by a manifesto that grew out of Åse’s support and deep knowledge of textile art.
When Hannah was invited in the summer of 2023 to exhibit at Brandts’ exhibition Nål & Tråd (Needle & Thread), where Pure Opspind would also be included in the exhibition catalogue, it became clear that the exhibition could not be realized without Åse’s expertise and approach to textiles and craft.
During the same period, Åse and Hannah had begun singing in an artists’ choir led by composer and songwriter Mette Damm. Here, Mette shared her working methods across media, which resonated with Hannah, who began discussing these ideas further with Mette outside the framework of the choir.
It soon became clear that Mette shared a deep interest in the same artistic movements and methods as Åse and Hannah. The three therefore decided to create a joint work for Nål & Tråd—a work that became the patchwork quilt and the collective HÅM.
HÅM is both the title of our work and the name of our group, and could be experienced at Kunstmuseum Brandts until February 2025.
